Passage
by Rebecca Lawton
No matter
that they die
by the thousands—
billions—as the
human gods
who can help,
who can ease
their way,
only stand by
saying, Look!
One by one
the creatures
charge the road
determined
to reach home
on the other side
determined
to make it solo—
no matter
that the numbers
stack against
them, that a great
curb ends
their passage—
determined to be
the one who
makes it, small
and acting alone
